Mosaic Chalcedony Quartz

Mosaic chalcedony is a natural fusion of chalcedony (microcrystalline quartz, SiO2) with other minerals, creating geometric patterns that look almost designed. Each piece is a one-of-a-kind geological composition where bands and zones of chalcedony interlock with jasper, quartz, and iron oxide minerals in striking mosaic-like arrangements. Mohs hardness is 6.5–7.

These formations occur when silica-rich fluids fill fractured host rock, depositing chalcedony in the gaps between mineral fragments. The result is a natural "stained glass" effect — angular geometric patterns in contrasting colors. Most mosaic chalcedony available commercially comes from Brazil and Indonesia. When polished, the patterns become vivid and dramatic, making these among the most visually striking display pieces in any crystal collection.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is mosaic chalcedony?

Mosaic chalcedony is a natural formation where chalcedony (microcrystalline quartz) fills fractures in host rock, creating geometric, mosaic-like patterns with other minerals. The patterns are entirely natural — not carved or assembled.

Where does mosaic chalcedony come from?

Most commercially available mosaic chalcedony comes from Brazil and Indonesia, where silica-rich volcanic environments create the conditions for this type of formation.

Is mosaic chalcedony natural?

Yes. The geometric patterns are entirely natural, formed by chalcedony filling fractures in rock over millions of years. No assembly, carving, or artificial patterning is involved.

How durable is mosaic chalcedony?

At Mohs 6.5–7, mosaic chalcedony is as durable as agate and jasper. It handles display and handling well. Clean with a soft damp cloth.
